Grief in the Time of Coronavirus

Grief is a common theme in this time of the coronavirus pandemic. The truth is, we are all grieving the loss of our normal routine, limited social contact, increased fear and anxiety, increased awareness of our mortality and a general sense of uncertainty about what the future holds. The impact of this widespread grief is more intense for individuals who are grieving a death during this time.

Medina Philanthropist to Play 100 Holes of Golf in One Day To Benefit Hospice of Medina County

Twelve years ago, Medina business owner and philanthropist Pat Spoerndle decided to put his passion for golf to work to give back to his hometown community. That’s when the concept behind his unique annual fundraiser, 100 for Hospice, was born. On Monday, Aug. 24, Spoerndle will once again take to the links to play 100 consecutive holes of golf in a single day at Fox Meadow Country Club to benefit HMC Hospice of Medina County. Joining him will be “Centurion” Mark Dorman, who earned the opportunity to shoot 100 holes of golf alongside Spoerndle for his generous $10,000 contribution to the fundraiser last year.

Hospice of the Western Reserve Achieves Highest Rating for Veterans Program

Hospice of the Western Reserve provides specialized care to veterans through its Peaceful & Proud program. This year, HWR was the first hospice in Northeast Ohio to achieve “level 5 partner” status from We Honor Veterans (WHV), a joint initiative of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA). This designation – the highest available - requires the completion of several activities, a greater emphasis on staff education and care plans addressing the complex needs of Vietnam era and combat veterans. As a level 5 partner, HWR also takes on the added role of serving as a regional mentor to other hospice organizations. Yearly recertification is required.

Hospice Care Provided in the Home Setting Keeps Families Together

When a family member is diagnosed with limited life expectancy, he or she often has a strong desire to spend the final days in the comfort of home. Comfort, touch and togetherness are among the key elements made possible by the Hospice of the Western Reserve. Yet these same principles are also in direct opposition to the distance and separation asked of all healthcare providers during a pandemic.
