“She would have loved it. She would have loved that everyone else is getting so much joy out of it,” says George Goodwin when asked how his wife Molly would feel about the new Molly Bliss Goodwin Garden at David Simpson Hospice House.

George was so moved by his and Molly’s hospice experience that, after her death, he became a David Simpson Hospice House hands-on volunteer. Additionally, George knew that he wanted to make a significant gift in memory of Molly—something lasting and beautiful. After discussing options with development staff, George decided that creating a memorial garden was the ideal way to honor his wife while bringing solace and pleasure to others.

I miss seeing “love, mom” on a birthday card.  My day feels empty.

I have spoken to a number of individuals who have remarked how difficult their birthday has become after the death of their mother or father. Every year on my birthday, I wait for the phone to ring for my aging parents to sing to me. I will miss their out of tune voices when I no longer get that call.

Joannie Rochette, bronze medalist in the 2010 Winter Olympics for Canada skated through her grief. Two days before the short program, Rochette’s mother died suddenly of a heart attack, just hours after arriving in Vancouver to watch her daughter skate. Rochette chose to continue competing in her mother’s honor. In the Olympic short program, Rochette recorded a personal best, the third highest score of the night. Two days later, she held on to her third place position after the long program and won the bronze medal.
