Vietnam Veteran Honors Fellow Veteran Martin Tindera

Martin Tindera of Olmsted Falls was honored by Hospice of the Western Reserve (HWR) with a virtual veterans recognition ceremony. Martin began his service in May of 1968 with the U.S. Army as a Communication Specialist, Class E4. He was stationed south of Saigon in the Mekong Delta and returned home on Christmas Day of 1969. He said it was a day he will never forget.

The virtual recognition ceremony was facilitated by HWR volunteer service manager Lisa Waryck and the West Campus hospice home care team in conjunction with Martin’s family.

Conducting the ceremony was volunteer Don Stark, a Marine combat veteran who served in Vietnam as a Lance Corporal. Martin’s wife and several of his grandchildren were present for the ceremony while his three children participated remotely.

Following the reading of patriotic reflections, the “Call to Colors” was played. Lance Corporal Stark stood at attention as he saluted Communications Specialist Fourth Class Tindera and thanked him for his service. Martin’s wife, Carolyn, had the privilege of honoring her husband by pinning an Ohio Veterans Partnership pin to his clothing. He also received a commemorative certificate honoring his military service.

Lance Corporal Stark is one of 68 volunteer veterans who participate in Hospice of the Western Reserve’s Peaceful and Proud initiative. The program provides specialized end-of-life care, veteran-to-veteran companionship and recognition ceremonies to honor veterans for their military service. The West Park resident has been a volunteer for nine years.
