Ten years after one of Medina's favorite shopping locations opened at 317 S. Court St., it is getting a major overhaul and expanding into an adjacent storefront. Life's Treasures Thrift Shop will host a grand re-opening on Friday, May 20 from 2 – 5 p.m. with refreshments, prize drawings and more. The event is open to the public; shopping will be available.

The shop owned and operated by Hospice of Medina County, now an affiliate of Hospice of the Western Reserve, opened on Oct. 9, 2006. In the 10 years since opening its doors to the public, treasure hunters and bargain shoppers have delighted in finds that include new and gently worn furniture, lamps, small appliances, books, seasonal items and home décor.

IMG_5661.JPGIn addition to finding great bargains on "like new merchandise," shoppers enjoy the personal satisfaction of knowing their purchases are supporting their friends and neighbors. Proceeds from the shop, as well as the seasonal Christmas Treasures store, benefit hospice patients and families in Medina County.

The expansion is the second for the store, which grew from 4,021 sq. ft. to 6,900 sq. ft. in 2010, when they took over the Gymboree space. This time, they are taking over the space of the former Got Milt gym (which has moved to a new location) and expanding from 6,900 sq. ft. to 10,645 sq. ft.

Human Resource Director Amy Wermer was instrumental in starting the store IMG_5662.JPGa decade ago and was excited to see the store expand once again.

"The expanded store will have a lot more to offer," Wermer said. "It will have a picture gallery, a larger children's area, specialty boutique, lighting fixtures, an expanded selection of medical equipment, an increased offering of kitchen merchandise and more."

While there is always a manager on duty, the rest of the store's staff is comprised of volunteers, who number in the 80s. Manager Stephanie Furey is one of the original store managers still at the store.

Furey said she, along with co-managers Theresa Daniels and Patricia Conklin, expressed gratitude to the volunteers who helped make the new space possible.

IMG_5663.JPG"We'd like to thank them for the countless hours and energy that the volunteers donated to us to make the expansion happen," Furey said. "We also need to thank the community for their support and continued generosity."

The community is invited to stop in and explore the newly expanded space and treasure hunt for some of the best bargains in town.
