Help Recruit With Volunteer Cards


​How many times have we found ourselves in line at the grocery store, waiting for an appointment at the salon or waiting at a doctor’s office when we strike up a conversation with a stranger about various meaningless topics such as the weather, how our sports teams are doing or politics? Sometimes in the course of these conversations, we can discover that there are really great people out there and we may think “Wow—he seems like a really nice person and he did mention that he is recently retired and looking for something new to get involved in…” but then his name—or yours—is called and we leave it at that, say our goodbyes and we’re out the door back on our respective paths…

Patient and Plants: How 'Carol's Plants' Will Live On, Help Others


​Earlier this year, Hospice of the Western Reserve volunteer Bob Rensel hosted a Volunteer Initiative at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. Bob, a horticulturalist at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, is certified in Healthcare Garden and Design. His education highlighted the great value of plants for hospice patients including these benefits for ill and dying people:

Life's Treasures Thrift Shop Expands, Hosting Grand Opening


Ten years after one of Medina's favorite shopping locations opened at 317 S. Court St., it is getting a major overhaul and expanding into an adjacent storefront. Life's Treasures Thrift Shop will host a grand re-opening on Friday, May 20 from 2 – 5 p.m. with refreshments, prize drawings and more. The event is open to the public; shopping will be available.

What Happens in Hospice When Family is Unavailable?


I am meeting Pat on a beautiful afternoon in her light-filled University Circle apartment. A dazzling array of exotic orchids are in full bloom on her windowsills. The historic building is not far from Case Western Reserve University, where Pat enjoyed a successful career as executive assistant to the director at the Hearing and Speech Center for 12 years, administrator at the Law School for 13 years, followed by administrator in Medical Education at the medical school for seven years. We are joined by her Teacup Poodle companion, Casey of the Western Reserve, named for her former employer.
