Q & A with Walk to Remember 2017 Volunteer Chairs: Ralph and Marianne Betters

Marianne:  We live in a culture that is not comfortable thinking of death or talking about it. We do everything we can to stay young; it's a billion-dollar industry. So, when a person receives a terminal diagnosis, it can be very lonely for them and their family. So many who are close to them do not know what to say and some pull back. They don't want to pull back, but they feel helpless.

Why Art and Music Therapy Matter to Me

Obviously, living with a terminal illness is extremely stressful and heart breaking.  But we as a family went all-in together.  We did so much. Hospice of the Western Reserve supported us in creating a care strategy to take care of Mom. Music and art therapy allowed us to create memories and works of art that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

A Family Caregiver's Story

Q: Why was it so important to your mom to have a voice in her care?
A: Mom was scared. Everything about her disease was causing her to lose her autonomy. When you can no longer feed yourself, go to the bathroom alone or even raise a tissue to wipe tears from your eyes, having a say in your care matters.  While she became trapped within her own body, she could still decide who she invited into her home.  She welcomed the hospice team into our family. They  gave us comfort in our greatest time of need.

Three Daughters Grateful for “Circle of Comfort” in their Mom’s Home

Default blog teaser image

Dear Hospice of the Western Reserve Staff,

Our Mom, Mary Buckner, was so fortunate to spend her final days in her own home under your care. We cannot say enough about what that meant to us, and, on some level, the comfort she herself probably experienced as a result of being able to die in her home in her own bed. It was especially meaningful to the three of us, her daughters.

Having Hospice Closer to Home

Our patient Linda knew more about hospice care and Hospice of the Western Reserve than most—she was an oncology nurse. Throughout her career she cared for thousands of patients and comforted countless families. When her own disease progressed beyond the point of treatment, Linda was very definitive in her choice of care providers.
