Motivated by the care and kindness that many of their friends and family had received while in the care of Hospice of the Western Reserve, Charlotte and Mary decided it was time to give back. As long-time community volunteers, Charlotte and Mary wanted to use their time and talents to help support HWR’s mission. The couple started their training just before the COVID-19 pandemic and began supporting the agency by volunteering at the reception desk at David Simpson Hospice House. As restrictions lifted, Mary began to lend her talents as a former special education professional by visiting patients who have dementia, developmental disabilities and pediatric patients. Charlotte, who retired from the retail banking industry, supports HWR by helping with administrative tasks at Headquarters and working with a volunteer team for the quarterly Warehouse Sales.
As a couple who volunteer for the same organization, Charlotte and Mary both feel they find a deep sense of connection and shared purpose. “When we first got together, we decided that we are joined at the heart and not at the hip,” says Charlotte. Throughout their 28-year relationship, they have volunteered at numerous organizations and supported various community initiatives. “It’s nice to have someone who understands what you’re doing and how you’re spending your time,” says Mary. “They know why you are choosing to volunteer for this particular organization, and it only strengthens our relationship.” Together, they have found that volunteering together at Hospice of the Western Reserve has aligned their values and interests while working toward a shared mission. It also offers them the flexibility to utilize their talents in fulfilling ways. “It’s a calling when you want to help patients and their loved ones,” says Mary. “Learn all of the ways you can support the mission, educate yourself and get involved.”
